There have been more murder trials during 1931 than usual. The case of Rex v. Wong Cheung in the June Sessions lasted ten days in its trial and retrial.
The supplementary vote now requested is estimated to cover expendi- ture for the remainder of 1931.

The sum asked for is the total estimated deficit as at the year's end.
The supplementary sum is to cover the increased cost of kerosene and of disinfectants owing to the fall in the value of the dollar.

Approval is requested of the payment of a gratuity equivalent to one year's salary less pension already drawn to the orphan of the late Ip Sang, Head Foreman, Fire Brigade, who died on the 19th June, 1931, 9 months after retiring on pension.
The above sub-head in the Estimates is usually taken only to cover gratuities when death occurs during the actual service of an officer.
The Finance Committee has already expressed its approval of this payment. (C.S.0. 3162/30).

Provision made in Estimates (page 51 sub-head 21) $ 2,550 The purchase of this machine for the acceleration of the laundry work at Victoria Gaol was approved in the Estimates. $850 represents the difference between the 1931 Estimates Exchange rate of 14 and a rate of 1. (C.S.O. 11 in 224/31).
